QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Ask a Question
  • Can you put the color in a select place? Say I want to print SpongeBob can I print it where black is on his feet, brown on his pants, white on his shirt, then a yellow body without it looking a tie dye? The colors go where they are suppose to?

Hello. Great question. It won’t matter where you put the colors in the machine. They way you would execute the colors in your print is during the slicing process. The recommended slicer is Voxelizer. Within Vic you identify which port has which color as you’ve loaded it. In Vox you can put colors where you want on your print and also mix colors.

  • Can Graphene PLA filament be used?

Yes, Graphene PLA should be no problem for the Crane Quad, as long as it's 1.75mm.

  • Can you use PVA filament in this printer?

Yes, PVA will work and can be printed on the Crane Quad.

  • Can you print your own printing files? And if so, do I have to use a special printing software to print my files.

Yes, you can print your own print files.
You can use the free downloadable software with the Crane Quad.  You can also use something else.
Just an FYI, the Crane Quad is released, but comes with no directions until much later in the spring.
It's almost a given that you'll have to reach out to M3D tech support to get it assembled and for print settings.
It's a great printer, but customers that have purchased it from us have found themselves very frustrated out of the box.

Terms and Conditions of Purchasing the M3D Crane Quad from Project 3D Printers:

The M3D Crane is a very advanced machine and is not for beginners.  It can be quite technical, and often times, temperamental.

From M3D, "The Crane Quad is NOT for beginners, there is a steep learning curve, even for advanced 3D printer users. Customers should not expect to be able to use it perfectly right away, they will need to get the hang of it first. They need to go into it with those expectations."

Due to the complexity of the machine and the potential for impatience of customers to endure the learning curve involved in owning an M3D Crane Quad, Project 3D Printers will no longer accept returns nor will Project 3D Printers offer refunds for the M3D Crane Quad.  All Sales are Final.

Taking in four filaments, the Crane Quad can either print one filament at a time and quickly switch, allowing you to use different colors and materials on the same print, or it can combine filaments together to create new colors or even hybrid materials. If you use our color-calibrated CMYK filaments in the Crane Quad, you can create over 50,000 colors from just four filaments, saving you a lot of money and space. Additionally, the direct drive style feed and stainless steel 0.35mm nozzles allow you to beautifully print a diverse range of unique filaments such as Tough 3D Ink or Carbon PETG. The Quad also comes with the same base features as the Bowden, such as the Duet 2 Maestro, 24V heated bed, a 230x230x250 mm build volume, a web-enabled control interface, and LCD screen.

CONSUMER 3D PRINTING IS READY FOR COLOR In recent years, 3D printers have grown in size as reliability, print quality and print speeds have improved. Multi-head and multi-gantry machines are quickly becoming the go to 3D printers for many of the more advanced users. Multi-head in particular has garnered a lot of interest as users look to make printing with multiple colors and multiple materials the standard.  M3D thinks the time is right to push to push the envelope of innovation into full color, so that customers can really start to make their ideas come alive.

THE CRANE QUAD IS BRINGING COLOR 3D PRINTING TO THE CONSUMER MARKET

The Crane Quad will allow you to simultaneously print with four different materials or color filaments. Within one print, you now have the option to mix or individually extrude with up to four individual filament types or colors. We're extremely proud to launch the only consumer 3D printer capable of printing over 50,000 colors to the consumer market with the Crane Quad.

Experienced 3D printer users who are seeking the newest innovation with the greatest printing ability will find the Crane Quad to be the printer for them. No other printer available on the consumer market can offer the capability and potential of M3D's Crane with its four-in, one-out extruder. One of the more celebrated aspects of this printer is its ability to unlock over 50,000 colors across palettes of carefully calibrated CMYK (cyan, magenta, yellow and key - black, white, transparent) filaments.

At the heart of the Crane Quad lies the QuadFusion 3D print head, guided by a powerful Duet 2 Maestro control board. Together, they can control the stabilized mixing of the four different filament in order to achieve color mixing. How exactly? Just like how any color palette works, the Crane Quad can extrude percentages of each filament throughout the print. That means it can print 100% of one color or mix ratios among the four filament to achieve color creation or shared filament properties.

Further, the Crane Quad can allocate different materials between support, wall and infill. Say, for example, you have a complicated model with lots of supports needed and which is set to have thick walls. For convenience sake, the Crane Quad can print the supports in a dissolvable material and, for cost savings, print the infill with ABS-R filament. That alone is a reason why the Crane Quad provides so much value.

Here is the heart of the Crane Quad, the QuadFusion four-filament extruder:

The following image reflects how filament can be fused to create a variety of colors. In this example, we mixed red, blue, black and clear ABS-R filament. Yes, a 15-color sampling from just four filaments.

We've been able to print with four filaments with the support of a small group from open source community. During the course of this campaign and well afterwards, we look forward to major progress as we partner with more supports of the color 3D printing movement. To help facilitate all of this, we plan on making all color-printing plans available via GitHub and sponsor a Hackathon before the campaign ends to really kick development off.
